Blues Singer Jimmy Witherspoon Dead
It's been especially tough recently for those with the blues. Earlier this year, both Johnny Copeland and Luther Allison died, and harp player Junior Wells fell into a coma from which he has yet to recover. On Thursday, Jimmy Witherspoon, known as "Spoon," has died at the age of seventy-four of natural causes. The man behind "Blues Around the Clock" and "Some of My Best Friends Are the Blues" got his start in 1944 when he joined Jay McShann's band in California. In 1949, his first single, "Ain't Nobody's Business," made its way up to the No. 1 spot on the R&B charts, shortly before the emergence of rock and roll slowed his career down. A comeback appearance at the 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival put him back into the spotlight. His 1995 Live at the Mint album, with Robert Ford, was nominated for the Best Traditional Blues Album at the Grammys.
Now.... just how many souls have come to get
their blues on?
